Introduction

 Hello everyone! 

My name is Szymon Baum and I'm excited to begin my teaching journey. 


I always get a little ashamed and discouraged, when I say this in a class full of incredibly skilled and experienced individuals, but I have no prior teaching experience. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Management of Musical Enterprises, which is something very different to what I'm here to do. While this is a brand new challenge for me, I'm excited about working hard to rise to the challenge.


English has been a huge part of my life since I was very young. I started studying it when I was in pre-school and fell in love with the language around the time of elementary school. Since then I got to finish the International Baccalaureate Program and have lived in the US for a number of years, earning my Bachelor's Degree there. As a teacher, I hope to instill the same passion for the subject that I felt when I was younger. English is not a set subject like many others school - you can connect it to anything. Whether you're passionate about sport, music, movies, biology, or anything else, you can broaden your horizons and fall in even deeper into your passion through English. That's what I believe is the key to falling in love with the subject and language.

I know I have a lot of work to do to prove that I can become a skilled teacher, but I am ready for this challenge and cannot wait to begin working.

      So do I!!! You have everything that a teacher needs, plus some unique features, like perceptiveness, reflection and a quiet way of influencing reality around you, without much fuss, but really effectively. These are leadership qualities of the best kind!

      On May 16th we attended our last seminar of the first year of studies, which was on the topic of 'Authentic Materials' . It was conducted by Ms. Paulina Andruszkiewicz-Glińska, who we previously had the pleasure of meeting during a different webinar. The experience lasted an hour and a half, consisted of a presentation, as well as practical activities, and inspired me a lot to include this topic in my own teaching. Reflection on Arts & Crafts Webinar

      Our first webinar this semester was on the topic of using arts and crafts in ELT classrooms. It was a very interesting experience, which provided me with a lot of creative and practical tips how to make English lessons were engaging, especially for very young learners. The webinars with experts from the field are always a great opportunity to learn brand new techniques and this experience was no exception.     The presenter had a very clear way of presenting the material - she would show us an image of a common object, ask us how we think it could be useful or transformed into an educational prop, and then discussing with us her ideas. I thought having this structure was a smart idea for the listeners to be engaged and prepared to be involved. It enabled to foster a creative and collaborative environment, where everyone was working together to come up with the best ways to turn everyday objects into fun teaching materials. English Phonetics Diary #4

      For my fourth Phonetics Diary entry I decided to explore the mmmEnglish YouTube channel. The video that I decided to write about was about "English Pronunciation Training | Improve Your Accent & Speak Clearly". The title caught my attention and made me curious about the new information I could still learn about pronunciation. In this post I wanted to share what I learned from the video and my general reflection on this resource.      The presenter started the video by saying that she believes that there's two things needed to significantly improve one's accent and clear pronunciation - a native speaker and knowledge of the IPA alphabet.  Spelling can be misleading when trying to learn pronunciation. The same letter can be pronounced in different ways depending on the word.
